Whenever the Falicrofts open a bottle of champagne, we saber the top with a ceremonial dagger. My dad learned the tradition while stationed in Berlin Germany, during the cold war, and he has passed on the tradition to the Falicroft clan. He even bought Chad a dagger of his own for such occasions.
You start by etching the glass around the cork. Then you hold the bottle steady in one hand, and place the dagger down the length of the bottle, in the other hand. When you are ready, you slide the dagger up the bottle and catch the lip at the top. Keep you hand moving and make sure to flick the tip of the bottle. You don't have to do it hard or fast, but just the motion of the moment should cut the top of the bottle and send the cork flying. Once you pour the flowing champagne, you will notice that the lip of the bottle is now smooth. If done correctly, it should be a clean cut, without any shards of glass.
Lauren has never done this before, so it was her first time. She was a little nervous but Chad talked her through the steps and helped a little bit. She popped that bottle on the first try, just like a pro! As we poured our glasses with champagne, she seemed very proud, and Charlie made sure we knew that he wanted to do it next. Don't worry kiddo, I am sure you will get to join the club soon! =)

Chad and I definitely enjoyed that bottle of champagne, while the kids definitely enjoyed their "grown-up" glasses of chocolate milk!
It wasn't the fanciest of celebrations, but at this point in our lives, Chad and I would not have wanted to celebrate the occasion any other way!!
