Charlie's Big Boy Ice Skating Class

With the new year, we decided to start Charlie in ice skating lessons.  He did not really enjoy the "Daddy & Me" lessons, so we bit the bullet and put him in a group lesson, without a parent on the ice.  We tried very hard to play it up and make it sound extremely special and fun.  Lauren even got in on the fun and kept saying that she wanted to go back to ice skating lessons.

It seemed to work.  The first day, Charlie was very excited to go to the rink.  We got his skates on and walked over to meet the coach and other kids.  They sat down and talked for a few minutes.  Charlie even seemed to be making new friends with 2 other boys.  He liked their helmets, they liked his skates.  =)

The group marched over to the ice and off they went.  There was a lot of falling, and sitting on the ice, but Charlie stayed out there and participated.  He even had a big smile on his face when he came off the ice.

We had high hopes that this excitement and participation would continue through the weeks.  It did not!!  It was obvious that he did not enjoy falling down and he had a hard time getting back up.  He became frustrated and many times the teacher was helping another frustrated student.  It was difficult for everyone.  Eventually, he refused to go out on the ice.  So we did not sign him up for any more lessons.  We will wait a bit and try again when he is a little bigger.

Although Charlie does not enjoy the group lessons, he does seem to enjoy the public skate sessions with his family and our hockey family.  He especially likes chasing after Coach Harry and Lauren.

The jury is still out on whether or not Charlie will play ice hockey, but we are hopeful that he will at least enjoy spending some time out on the ice with his family.

Way to go Charlie!!  Keep marching little guy!
